Abstract

At the root of the current boundaries to socioeconomic fertility we find three forms of reductionisms: anthropological, corporate and value reductionism. The ultimate aim of
the civil economy research program is that of broadening our minds to cope with these
three forms of reductionism by documenting theoretically and empirically. In this work
we explain why the civil economy paradigm is already at work to transform the current
socioeconomic environment for the better. In the second section we illustrate the rich
historical and philosophical roots of civil economy. In the third we discuss from a
theoretical point of view why the current reductionist perspective may be harmful both
in economic and human ways. In the fourth we introduce the fundamental concept of
relational goods. In the fifth we provide ample empirical evidence challenging the
reductionist paradigm and documenting that the two additional hands of responsible
citizens and corporations are already at work. In the sixth we provide evidence on the
nexus between human and civic values and economic prosperity. The seventh with
some policy suggestions concludes the paper.
