Modernization of the State and Performance Indicators of the Public Sector

Since the mid 80’s several countries have introduced performance indicators to evaluate management of public institutions and the results of the activities of the public sector. This was a response to the necessity of improving efficiency and quality in the services provided by the State and increasing its transparency to society. This study examines the present situation in this area of countries that are members of OECD and analysis in detail the experience of Chile, that is the Latin American country who has progressed the most in the introduction of performance indicators and in the improving the management of the State. The diverse control functions and characteristics of the indicators are explained and a list of useful indicators to move forward the modernization of the State is presented.
