Abstract

In the debate or discussion on issues of bioethics (in vitro fertilization, use of human embryos for research or therapeutic purposes, surrogate motherhood, euthanasia, palliative sedation...) the dignity of the human being is often left aside, but it should be the first ethical objective in every human action. This dignity, the quality that every human being possesses, lies in his being. Then, all human actions should be an expression and manifestation of what human dignity itself demands. Such dignity is expressed in the actions performed by human beings. However, the article shows how the human being is not treated, in many bioethical issues, as end in itself, but as a medium at the service of economic, therapeutic, research or “humanitarian” purposes.
